19 of Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hard courts

A comeback the Russian player claimed his initial championship for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has endured a torrid period, managing just one match at the big events and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

The player's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in particular - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-term mentor Cervara.

Now working with his coach and Goetzke, he has gradually advanced in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over challenger Moutet.

It is Medvedev's first trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard court since March of that year.

The win also means the Russian has secured twenty-one championships at twenty-one different tournaments.

"It's the first time I'm at a event with my children simultaneously, so to get a title is particularly special," stated world number 14 the champion.

"This title is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I got when my older daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his past six championship matches, including in that event earlier this year.

His retrieving play style and regular reactions on the playing surface had led some to wonder if his ability to compete at the top level was concluded.

Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and compete assertively, supported by an enhanced serving game.

Medvedev recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the challenging opponent, securing 4 of the final five games to gain the advantage.

The pair traded service breaks in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his first professional victory, took control to push for a decider.

Moutet saved four initial opportunities in a competitive third set before the champion broke to that score to secure the win.

Appropriately, Medvedev secured the title with a point at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
